Spotlight Interviews

Sam Lawrence

WRITTEN BY:

June’s spotlight interview is with our fab Commercial & Operations Director, Sam Lawrence.

Can you tell me how your career path has brought you to Mando-Connect?

I always pursued a career in finance, starting with an NHS grad scheme, however I quickly realised it didn’t suit. I found working in media and entertainment more rewarding and interesting. I worked at Merlin entertainment for 4 years, then a range of small-medium marketing agency in London for 7 years. For Mando-Connect, I was interviewed by Charlie, Becky and Paul and instantly had good rapport with them.

Are you part of any loyalty schemes yourself?

Loads – my wallet is full of cards. I’ve always had a loyalty scheme, and if there’s a discount to be had I am usually the go-to guy to get it. I immediately recognised a lot of Mando’s current and previous work.

If you could have a new skill overnight, what would it be?

I’d like to be more creative. Having worked around creatives for 10+ years, I’ve realised it’s not my strongest skill set and I admire those with that brain.

Tell me a bit about your role at Mando-Connect and what you have been up to so far?

In my time here, I have got to grips with our current client base and the working models of fixed fee vs promotions loyalty. I’ve got to know the team and their roles, and how I can help enhance their roles to help ensure Mando continues to be a commercial astute business, and to ensure the day-to-day operations operate smoothly.

What’s your main motivation to get up and start work everyday?

Making a difference, being in this role no two days are the same and knowing that I’ve got the skillset to help Mando grow and hit its targets.

Tell us something surprising about you?

I’ve only had 8 birthdays, making me Mando’s youngest employee. (Leap year baby!)

If you could do any job for just one day, what would it be?

Shard window cleaner – love heights and abseiling! A complete thrill seeker. That or a motor racing driver.

What have you learnt about yourself in the last few years?

I’ve learnt to back myself more. Gaining the confidence to make key decisions. That and my patience and resilience, especially with being a new father.

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

I would say a string of very good and the a couple of bad bosses, learning how to work with mutual respect. You learn from the bad bosses what not to do, and what doesn’t motivate people. You possibly learn more off the bad bosses than the good ones!

You’re a Glastonbury veteran, what are your 5 must haves for the festival?

You need: Tent, cider, toilet roll, paracetamol and an open mindedness to try something new.
